Employer Spotlight: American Cruise Lines

Founded in 1991, American Cruise Lines offers its passengers and staff a unique experience aboard their small cruise ships which hold no more than 150 passengers. They provide trips to a variety of rivers in the United States like the Mississippi River, Southeast U.S., Northwest, and the Pacific Northwest. American Cruise Lines can also transport passengers back in time with their special theme cruises- Some notable ones include Lewis & Clark, Mark Twain Tribute, and American Civil War cruises! Their high quality of entertainment, ships, and customer service have not gone unnoticed. In fact, they have been recognized for the following awards.

In order to gain an insight into American Cruise Lines, I spoke with Charles Nielsen who is currently a recruiting assistant.

Could you tell me more about American Cruise Lines?

American Cruise Lines is the largest U.S. cruise company and operates the newest fleet of riverboats and small cruise ships around the country. American Cruise Lines provides guests an extraordinary river cruising experience while exploring the historic waterways of the United States. We recognize that our employees have made us, and will keep us America’s leading river cruise specialist.

Can you describe a typical work day?

On a ship each day brings something new. As we cruise the US, Hotel Service Members and Deckhands typically follow the “12-7-12” Rule. You live and work on the ship, so you are interacting with guests constantly and have to be willing to work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, for 12 consecutive weeks. This is typical in the cruise industry. But don’t worry you’ll have a few hours each day to yourself to rest or get off the boat and explore whatever city you are docked in.

What is the most rewarding aspect of working for this company?

It is a one-of-a-kind experience. You are able to travel to many places around the country, save money, and network with experienced professionals.

How would you describe the culture of American Cruise Lines?

Our philosophy and culture for success is simple; hire talented people then provide training, support systems and motivation so they will thrive.  It can be a demanding work environment, but attention to detail and a customer focus make it a rewarding experience This formula is what has made us the leader in the small cruise ship industry.

What position(s) are you currently looking to fill?

Due to our rapid rate of growth each year we are looking for a wide range of positions including: Hotel Service Members, Deckhands, Hotel Dining Supervisors, Housekeeping Managers, Cruise Directors, and General Managers.

Can you describe your ideal applicant?

Someone with a positive attitude and who is willing to work hard and learn. Ideal candidates will have leadership ambitions and be able to quickly adapt to any scenario.

What advice would you give to students looking to pursue a career in this field?

Be prepared to work hard, be flexible and be a team player.  If you follow those guidelines you will succeed and climb through the ranks.  There is a lot of potential for growth as an individual. River cruising is a rapidly growing industry and American Cruise Lines is leading the way.
