Employer Spotlight: Evansville Sports Corporation

The Evansville Sports Corporation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that values community engagement, youth involvement in sports, and charity work. Their mission is to “enhance Southwestern Indiana’s economy, image and quality of life through the attraction, promotion, and development of high profile, signature sporting events.” Through their initiative, Old National Bank Golf Gives Back, the proceeds of all online ticket sales go towards a participating charity (selected by you!). If you aren’t looking for an internship, this organization also relies on volunteers for their events. If you are interested, you can sign-up here.

Executive Director, Jason Sands, answered the following questions:

Could you tell me more about The Evansville Sports Corporation?

We attract, operate and create high profile sporting events. We’ve managed events like the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship (televised live on CBS), the PGA Tour United Leasing Championship (televised on the Golf Channel) and the NCAA DII Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Regionals (hosting the Nationals in 2017).

What’s the most rewarding aspect of working for this organization?

One of the most rewarding parts of this business is the impact we are having on our community.  The events we secure and manage bring in millions of dollars for the local economy and our events have been televised in more than 7 million households across the world so the exposure we are creating for our community is substantial.  We work with local community and business leaders on a day to day basis trying to build our community up and being a part of that team is very rewarding.

How would you describe the culture of The Evansville Sports Corporation?

We are a newer organization (created in 2010) but we are gaining momentum one event at a time.  We have an amazing board of directors made up of some of the CEO’s of major regional and national corporations and their support and guidance is a key factor in our organization’s success.

What position(s) are you currently looking to fill?

We are currently looking for summer interns that will help us with the NCAA 4 year bid cycle we will be submitting bids for as well as the National Softball Association’s Girls Fast Pitch ‘B’ World Series we are hosting in July (220+ teams from 15 states). We are also organizing a Relay Marathon and an NCAA DII Basketball Classic in the fall and we will be working on those events throughout the summer.

Can you describe your ideal applicant?

I’m looking for someone that is motivated to have a career in sports.  Someone that is willing to learn and is able to adapt quickly to a fast-paced environment.

What advice would you give to students looking to pursue a career in this field?

Get as much experience as you can. Volunteer for events, get involved in extracurricular and community activities and take on leadership roles when possible.

If you are interested in interning for The Evansville Sports Cooperation, stop by the Sport & Business Career Focus on Tuesday, November 10th from 6:00-8:00PM.
