Could you tell me about the 500 Festival?
The 500 Festival is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1957. Our mission is to provide life-enriching events and programs that celebrate the spirit and legacy of the Indianapolis 500 and foster a positive impact on the city of Indianapolis and state of Indiana. One of the largest festivals in the nation, each year we produce more than 50 events and programs that are attended by more than half a million people. Since its founding, the 500 Festival has contributed more than $350 million in economic value to Indianapolis.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of working for this company?
The most rewarding aspect of working for the 500 Festival is the opportunity to positively impact our community and state. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the hard work that goes into our large events, like the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon and the IPL 500 Festival Parade. However, it’s equally rewarding to be part of reinvesting the funds generated through these events back into the community through our free programs and events like our free Education Program and free KidsFit Program.

How would you describe the culture of the 500 Festival?
The culture of the 500 Festival is fun, hardworking and team-driven. There’s not a day that goes by that you don’t hear members of our team laughing together. But when it’s time to host an event, everyone’s laser focused on working together to accomplish the task at hand to make events a success.

What positions you are currently looking to fill?
We have 9 internships available for the Spring 2016 Semester.

  • Event & Program Internship – Mini-Marathon, Memorial Service
  • Event & Program Internship – Parade, Education Program, KidsFit
  • Event & Program Internship – Miler Series, Expo, Kids’ Day

  • Customer Relations &Ticketing Internship
  • Volunteer Program Internship
  • Event & Program Internship – Mini-Marathon Post Race Party, Rookie Run, SnakePit Ball, Breakfast at the Brickyard, Princess Program
  • Public Relations Intern
  • Graphic Design Intern

Can you describe your ideal applicant?
The ideal applicant is someone who isn’t afraid of hard work and enjoys being part of a team. Someone who is familiar with the 500 Festival and our mission. Someone who has interest in gaining professional experience, learning plenty of new things and then applying that knowledge to our events!

What advice would you give to students looking to pursue a career in this field?
INTERNSHIPS! There’s no better way to figure out what you want to do after graduation, and to apply your academic studies than an internship. What’s more, after you secure the internship, be willing to put in the hard work, give 110% during that time, and ask lots of questions. You’ll be amazed at how much you can learn by simply doing those things. You’ll learn a lot from the fulltime staff and, when you graduate and you’re looking for job leads and/or recommendations, they’ll be more than willing to help you out!

My other piece of advice, do research and identify professionals working in the field that you want to be a part of, and ask them to setup informational interviews. Everyone remembers how scared they were just before graduating college. We all can identify with that scary feeling.

500 Festival will be attending the Career Expo on September 24th from 4-7PM.
