index

Name: Susie Etienne

Current Company and Position: Schahet Hotels, VP of Sales

Position(s) they are currently hiring for: Our current open positions can be found on Schahet Hotels.com. Most of the current openings are in located in the Indianapolis area. We also offer collegiate internship and externship opportunities and work closely with students and faculty advisors to ensure program requirements for college credit are fulfilled.

Could you tell me about Schahet Hotels? Schahet Hotels is a multi-franchise owner/operator of hotels that has been in business since 1962.  Our goal is not to be the largest hotel management company out there, but be top in class in what we do and be the premiere management company.  We operate highly recognizable brands including Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn, Residence Inn by Marriott, DoubleTree, Hilton Garden Inn, and Wingate by Wyndham.

What’s the best part of about working at Schahet Hotels? Associates come first.  We believe that HAPPY ASSOCIATES = HAPPY GUESTS.  Our mission statement is “Living the hospitality culture that excels in Associate development, Guest experiences, and Investor returns.”  Because we are locally based in Indy and most of our hotels are located in central Indiana, Schahet Hotel associates and customers enjoy a very short and direct line of communication to our corporate office and the entire executive leadership team. I especially appreciate that we focus on staying true to our RISE core values (Respect, Integrity, Service, Excitement).

How would you describe the culture of Schahet Hotels?  The all-important foundation of our RISE culture is based on our core values of Respect, Integrity, Service and Excitement.  We are increasingly involved in the communities in which we operate through our emerging “SHOP Program”.  SHOP stands for Schahet Hotels Outreach Program and two of the biggest projects we support include Give Kids the World, to whom we’ve donated over $10,000, and Gleaners Food Bank.  Another aspect of our culture is Sustainability and we are very proud to be recognized as one of the first management company adopters of the Clean the World Hotel Recycling Program.  Our hotels are Green Key certified and participate a variety of green action programs.  At the hotel level, these efforts are led by ECO-CAPTAINS who ensure that we are following industry leading best practices in recycling and sustainability.

Could you tell us a bit more about the positions you are currently looking to fill?  As previously mentioned, we offer collegiate internship/externship opportunities and work closely with both students and faculty advisors to ensure program requirements for college credit are fulfilled.  The company has also recently developed a Manager in Training (MIT) program in an effort to improve our management bench strength and prepare our up and coming managers to take over the future of our company as leadership changes occur.

Do you have any advice for students interested in pursuing a hospitality career?

A word of advice that I’d like to offer students is that there is no replacement for entry-level hotel experience. Students should not be overly concerned with where they start in the hotel business, but on how they can contribute to an enjoyable work environment and how they can be innovative in their problem solving approach to help fellow associates and guests.  Schahet associates who are excited to come work every day and demonstrate the Schahet RISE values naturally emerge as leaders and are quickly advanced up the management ladder.
