Current Company and Position: Total Quality Logistics- National Sales Recruiter
Total Quality Logistics (TQL) is a non-asset based freight brokerage company founded in Cincinnati, OH with 21 different offices in 10 different states. After reading the following interview with Megan Candee, a National Sale Recruiter based out of the Indianapolis office, you will better understand why TQL was voted one of the best places to work in Indiana in 2013 and 2014.
What is the best part of working at TQL: There are a lot of things we do at our offices that you don’t see at other offices – themed parties, team celebrations, crazy competitions – and we work hard to make the work environment an enjoyable place to come every day.
But the best part of working here are the investments the company makes in helping our employees grow their business – industry leading training, proprietary technology, and an unlimited compensation model. After all, people come to TQL to create a successful business career for themselves, a career that will give them the financial ability to support all of their other life goals.
How would you describe the culture at TQL: Every chance we get, in big and small ways, we celebrate people at TQL. It is nearly impossible to find a day at TQL when there isn’t a competition, contest, party, or team outing going on somewhere within the company. Because this can be a challenging industry to work in, our CEO recognized early on that employees needed multiple outlets to help encourage them, and add fun and camaraderie to each day. We have ping pong tables and corn hole boards in the office. We bring in massage therapists for ten minute back and neck massages. We organize office intramural sports teams. And last but certainly not least, there are TQL’s famous Friday beer drops that occur every time we break a company record or have a major milestone to celebrate. It’s only one beer per employee (or soft drink if that is their preference), but it is a great way to kick off the weekend with your co-workers and friends.
Could you tell me a bit more about the positions you are looking to fill: This is directly from our job description for our sales representatives: If you have an unbelievable work ethic (we’re talking top 10% of anyone you know), the drive for financial freedom, and skin thick enough for making cold-calls – then this might be the sales career for you. Our sales reps identify customers who need assistance in managing their truckload transportation processes and then service those accounts by managing the entire transportation process from the moment of pickup until the moment of delivery.
This is very much a “hire for attitude, train for skills” culture. There is no particular background that ensures an employee will be successful here. Attitude is the determining factor in whether a candidate is the right fit for our company. Individuals need to be self-motivated and competitive with a positive, can-do attitude. They need to be comfortable working in an environment with a lot of noise and a lot of action.
Do you have any ‘words of wisdom’ for those interested in a career at TQL: This isn’t an easy job and it isn’t right for everyone, and that’s ok. But for the person who enjoys sales and customer service, and has a desire to run their own business, this can be a very rewarding career. Our employees repeatedly share with us in company surveys that the unlimited compensation model is the main reason they chose to join our company. Their compensation is directly tied to how much effort they put forth. They like being in control of their own earning potential. And hard work is quickly recognized and rewarded here – 90% of our sales leadership team started in the sales rep role.
The interview process is great because you shadow current employees, have the opportunity to ask them questions yourself, listen in on live sales calls, and experience the action-packed environment first-hand.
And don’t be concerned that you have never worked in the logistics or trucking industries. Every new hire goes through our industry-leading training process and will have almost a year of classroom and real-world experience supporting an account before they start working on their own.
