With technology playing an increasingly important role in the business world, the third session of the SPH Career Kickstart series focusing on personal branding via online media was incredibly helpful.
The workshop was spent dissecting our personal LinkedIn profiles. I had no idea how much the social media site had to offer in terms of networking with professionals. Not only can you follow certain companies, but you can also connect with IU alumni in your field or in the location you hope to work in. Your searches can be surprisingly specific, allowing you to pinpoint important people. And after finding connections, LinkedIn identifies any of your connections that know the professionals you want to talk to, giving you an easy avenue for an introduction. Like I said, it’s crazy how helpful LinkedIn is – I now consider it an indispensible component of my internship and job search.
That being said, having a solid profile is key when using LinkedIn to network. The workshop highlighted the idea of “personal branding” when developing an online profile. The question you need to ask yourself is, “what kind of a professional do I want employers to see me as?” From there, tailor your profile to convey that image. A good online presence can go far in today’s business world, so it is key to go the extra mile with any form of social media (and that includes taking down your racy Facebook pictures!)
Join us on October 29th from 6-8pm in SPH 125 for the fourth workshop in the Career Kickstart series to learn the do’s and don’ts of interviewing. And don’t forget that attending four of the five workshops will make you eligible for an exclusive networking event tailored to you and your career goals.
