If you haven’t heard, the SPH Office of Career Services rolled out an exciting new series this year: the Career Kickstart Series! The series is made up of five sessions all meant to prepare you to succeed in your job or internship search. I will be attending all five sessions this semester as your Career Kickstart Correspondent! After each session I will report in on my experience. Have questions for me? Please leave a comment in the reply box below!
Career Kickstart Session One Report:
The first installment of the SPH Career Kickstart Series focused on professionalism and etiquette for networking. Admittedly, I thought I would be spending the two hours rolling my eyes from hearing the same advice that we’ve all heard over and over – smile, make eye contact, and girls, watch that hem! – but I was pleasantly surprised. We covered everything from how to conduct professional phone calls to making the right first impression with a strong handshake (yes, we practiced shaking each other’s hands). I left feeling empowered to jump into the networking world and start making connections in my field. The workshop gave me confidence that I will have a leg up on my competition at the upcoming career fair on October 23rd and I look forward to the next session.
Want to know the ins and outs of developing successful application materials (resume, cover letter, and references)? Join us at the next Career Kickstart session on September 24th from 6-8pm in SPH 125. Attending four out of the five workshops will make you eligible to attend an EXCLUSIVE networking event with businesses specific to your interests. It promises to be a great chance to practice what you’ve learned and begin your life as a public health professional.
